Turn Cricket Red

SUCC's 24-Hour Cricket Charity Event

Starting on Thursday 21st March 2024 at 10 pm, we will run a 24-hour cricket charity event to aid three causes: The Ruth Strauss Foundation, the University of Southampton's Cancer Immunology Fund and the Ignite Programme.

Over the 24 hours, some things we will be doing is:
  • Hosting an indoor cricket tournament, which consists of Clubs/Societies from the University of Southampton, facing off in fast-paced 5-over matches, crowning one team as our 24-Hour Tournament winners!
  • Wearing RED for The Ruth Strauss Foundation. It doesn't matter how much or how little it is, wear a full red 3-piece or just some red socks, anything will be great!
  • Running a sweepstake on how many runs will be scored throughout the event, with all entrants donating £1 to our page for each guess.
  • Inviting students of the University to engage in many cricket-related challenges, by having a stall at the heart of our campus. Where people can learn more about the benefits of being a part of a sports community, and learn more about cricket and the three causes we are raising money for. These challenges will include: catching as many balls in 60 seconds and hitting balls into targets to obtain points, just to name a few!
This is the second time we are running this charity event, and this year we are embarking on making it bigger and better! After raising £3,000 last year, we are making that our target this year, and looking to smash it and raise more money for our great causes!

Cricket is a sport where the social aspect is truly at the heart of why many of us play, allowing people to express themselves as well as having friends around them to help them through the ups and downs of life. The three causes we have decided to raise money for, are those in which support and raise awareness of any problems people may come across in life. So it doesn't matter if you play cricket at a high standard, or have no clue how our sport works, it's about getting as many people involved and joining a supportive and inclusive community!

In addition to our event taking place on Thursday 21st March 2024, 10 of our members from SUCC will be taking on the ABP Southampton Marathon on Sunday 7th April 2024. As much as running the marathon for our members is a great personal feat, it is also great for them to be running in aid of our three chosen charities. Running is an exercise that is just as simple as tying your laces, and you are off! 9 out of 10 of our members are all doing this for the very first time, and will hopefully be able to show anyone that with enough determination in training for a race like this, you can truly do anything if you put your mind to it!

Below is a little bit more information on the three causes we have chosen to raise money for:

The Ruth Strauss Foundation
In early 2018, Ruth Strauss, wife of Sir Andrew Strauss the former England cricket captain, was diagnosed with an incurable lung cancer that affects non-smokers. Ruth died on December 29th 2018; she was 46 years old and mother to two children, then aged 10 and 13.
In her memory, Sir Andrew has launched The Ruth Strauss Foundation to:
  • Provide emotional support for families to prepare for the death of a parent
  • Raise awareness of the need for more research & collaboration in the fight against non-smoking lung cancers.

University of Southampton's Cancer Immunology Fund
The Cancer Immunology Fund supports live-saving research at the Centre for Cancer Immunology at the University of Southampton. By donating to this page, you will be helping to push the boundaries of cancer research and drive forward new, live-saving immunology treatments.

Since the Centre first opened in 2018, donations from alumni and supporters like you have helped us to achieve incredible things in the fight against cancer. We’ve developed a revolutionary DNA cancer vaccine to encourage the immune system to recognise cancer; we have discovered new ways to identify patients that are twice as likely to die from lung cancer; and we have launched a clinical trial to test new immunotherapy treatments for bladder cancer.

The Ignite Programme
The Ignite Programme is a life-changing package of support that helps disadvantaged and underrepresented students flourish at university. By supporting Ignite, you can help us end education inequality and help these students experience everything Southampton has to offer.

Every year, we aim to welcome 60 new students onto the Ignite Programme to offer them an extensive three-year package of support and ensure they thrive in their studies.

We hope you can help us raise as much money as possible. If you are not able to make the event in person, you can still get involved! We will be live-streaming the whole event on our YouTube page which you can find by pressing the following link: SUCC YouTube Channel. Any donations are much appreciated, and we will make sure to post as many updates as possible on this page, and our social media pages to show you how much your donation means to us, and our three chosen causes!
